Welcome to kindergarten at Winton Elementaryl!
Kindergarteners at Winton come to school for a half day. The schedule is as follows:
Morning Kindergarten:
Mondays: 9:50-12:00
Tuesdays - Fridays: 8:50-12:00
Afternoon Kindergarten:
Mondays - Fridays: 12:45-3:30
We work hard in kindergarten! We focus a great deal of our day on literacy. As a group we read a range of texts, then ask and answer questions, retell, compare and contrast, and/or describe relationships within the story. To begin the reading process, kindergarteners learn and apply: concepts of print (example: Follow words from left to right), phonological awareness (Being able to hear and play with sounds in words. examples: How many sounds are in cat? What rhymes with cat?), phonics and word analysis skills (examples: One-to-one letter-sound correspondence and reading common high-frequency words), and read emergent-reader texts! In writing, kindergarteners will participate in shared writing projects and individual writing. Kindergarteners will use a combination of drawing and writing to compose opinion pieces, informative texts, and narrative. In math literacy, we work to learn number names, count and compare, describe and classify objects, and identify and analyze 2-D and 3-D shapes.
You will have lots of opportunities to visit us at Winton! Starting in October, I welcome parent volunteers into the classroom. We also have a Back-to-School Open House, parent teacher conferences (in November and March), PTA meetings (monthly), the Winton Luau, Santa and a Book, and much more!
